Brief facts about glycerol:
Glycerol, also called glycerine or glycerin, is a simple triol compound. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. The glycerol backbone is found in lipids known as glycerides. It is also widely used as a sweetener in the food industry and as a humectant in pharmaceutical formulations. Because of its three hydroxyl groups, glycerol is miscible with water and is hygroscopic in nature.
Dioxalin - Dioxalin is a reaction product of glycerol with oxalic acid at 533 K. Its IUPAC name is 5--1,4-dioxane-2,3-dione. Dioxalin readily loses two molecules of carbon dioxide at this high temperature to form allyl alcohol and therefore offers a method for conversion of glycerol to allyl alcohol.
Epichlorohydrin - Epichlorohydrin is an organochlorine compound and an epoxide. Despite its name, it is not a halohydrin. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent, garlic-like odor, moderately soluble in water, but miscible with most polar organic solvents.
Nitroglycerin - Nitroglycerin, also known as trinitroglycerin, nitro, glyceryl trinitrate, or 1,2,3-trinitroxypropane, is a dense, colorless, oily, explosive liquid most commonly produced by nitrating glycerol with white fuming nitric acid under conditions appropriate to the formation of the nitric acid ester.
Saponification /Soapmaking.
Solketal - Solketal is a protected form of glycerol with an isopropylidene acetal group joining two neighboring hydroxyl groups. Solketal contains a chiral center on the center carbon of the glycerol backbone, and so can be purchased as either the racemate or as one of the two enantiomers.
